What is an ETF?
An exchange traded fund (ETF) is an investment fund that is traded on a stock exchange. The aim of an ETF is to track the performance of a specified index (like the S&P/TSX Composite Index) and to provide you with a similar return as that index, less fees. Like a fund, your ETF investment gives you access to a portfolio of companies (stocks), bonds or other asset types (such as commodities).
How do I learn more about ETFs?
Start with iShares University. Designed specifically for investors, this ETF Toolkit provides you with all the resources you need to better understand ETFs, the benefits they provide and how to use them in your investment portfolio.

What are the benefits of using ETFs?
- Diversification: ETFs give you access to a whole world of investment options, covering a broad range of asset classes, sectors and geographies. Diversifying a portfolio can help to spread risk and avoids putting all your eggs in one basket.
- Cost effectiveness: ETFs often have lower costs than other types of investment funds.
- Transparency: Know what you own. With ETFs you know exactly what you’re investing in with daily visibility into what securities the fund holds, how it’s performing and its costs.
- Liquidity: ETFs are traded on stock exchanges, so you can easily make or add to an investment, or sell your investment. It’s as easy to get out as it is to get in.
